Different Alcohol based hand sanitizers have different amounts of alcohol content. Some have less than 60%, some have 60-90% while some have as much as 90-95%. Whatever be the percentage of alcohol, all alcohol-based sanitizers are inflammable and are a hazard if not used properly.
Alcohol based hand sanitizers contain either isopropanol, ethanol, n-propanol, or a combination of two of these products.
Ethyl alcohol, which is the main content of Hand Sanitizers, evaporates at room temperature into an ignitable vapour. It is considered to be a flammable liquid and hence, its storage in bulk should be maintained properly.
In a closed environment like an office building or a hospital or a house, it is better to take certain safety measures if the usage of alcohol based hand sanitizer is high.
- Reduce the sources of ignition
- Ensure that hand-sanitisers are safely stored
- Provide quick exit methods in case of fire
